Transportation Insight Serves with Samaratain’s Feet in Charlotte, NC
HICKORY, NC, July 20, 2010 – Saturday, July 10, 2010, was an exciting day for Transportation Insight and Samaritan’s Feet. Transportation Insight, LLC, is a national supply chain management firm headquartered in Hickory, North Carolina. Samaritan’s Feet is a non-profit organization dedicated to changing lives through Shoes of Hope distributions around the world. These organizations came together to conduct a shoe distribution in the heart of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Samaritan’s Feet was founded in 2003 by Manny Ohonme. As a child growing up in Africa, Manny received his first pair of shoes at the age of nine from a missionary. With that pair of shoes, he started playing basketball and other sports. He earned a spot on a traveling basketball team and on his high school team. After high school, Manny received a basketball scholarship to the University of North Dakota – Lake Region where he received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Manny spent ten years in the marketing and logistics business making his way up the ladder, but he never forgot the other little boys and girls in Africa who were still living under the strain of poverty, drug abuse, war, gangs, and other criminal activity. Determined to help impoverished people, Manny left the comfort and security of his executive position to birth the vision of Samaritan’s Feet. Manny’s goal for Samaritan’s Feet was to provide 10 million new pairs of shoes to 10 million impoverished children in 10 years.
On the morning of July 10, set up on the corner of 3rd Street and South McDowell Street in uptown Charlotte, employees from Transportation Insight and Samaritan’s Feet came together to do what they could to show support and help those in need. The reason behind a typical shoe distribution, whether it is in Lima, Peru, or Charlotte, North Carolina, is to meet with people to encourage them and share with them the love of Jesus Christ. Volunteers do this as they wash each person’s feet, get to know each of them for a few minutes, pray with them, and put a new pair of socks and shoes on their feet. At this particular distribution many inner city children and adults came from all parts of the city to receive the message of hope and a new pair of shoes. Wendy Gonzales, an employee at Transportation Insight said, “You go here thinking you are giving someone else a blessing, yet you are the one that is blessed. You can hear the stories, but until you go and have these experiences first-hand you can not understand how moving it all is.”
The stories that come back always provoke strong emotions, whether it is sadness or awe. One that stood out from this distribution was about the homeless man that had to have his shoes peeled off because they were so small. He received his first pair of new shoes in 10 years that day.
