Paul Thompson

Founder and Chairman

Paul Thompson is the vision behind Transportation Insight. It all began in the fall of 1999 when Paul embarked on creating a full-service, client-focused company providing custom-tailored supply chain solutions. He envisioned a company based on principles of integrity, excellence and community that would transform the logistics industry. Having spent the previous 15 years developing pricing models for some of the largest motor carriers in the United States, Paul was already a recognized innovator. With his passion for giving back to the community through organizations like Samaritan’s Feet and Ten Thousand Homes, it’s easy to understand why Transportation Insight is intensely focused on service to its clients, its associates and its community. Paul holds four executive officer/board-level positions and founded or co-founded six highly successful companies in the transportation/logistics industry. He serves on the board of several non-profit organizations, including Hickory Christian Academy, Appalachian State University’s Walker College of Business and the Charlotte Foundation YMCA. Paul is an Arkansas native with an Industrial Engineering degree from the University of Arkansas. He is also a devoted husband and father of four.

Chris Baltz

President and Chief Executive Officer

The captain of our ship, Chris Baltz brings over 23 years of executive experience in supply chain, logistics, and transportation management to the service of our clients. While holding executive positions at Arkansas Best Corporation and ABF Freight System, Chris launched new services for warehousing, international, truckload brokerage, and consumer household goods transportation. He is a recognized expert in less-than-truckload (LTL) transportation and a leading innovator in business-to-business and business-to-consumer offerings. Chris is a former board member of the National Motor Freight Traffic Association and past chair of the National Classification Committee. He earned his BS in Industrial Engineering from the University of Arkansas. Chris serves as a Deacon in his local church and recognizes his wife and two children as his inspiration.

Laura Easley

Chief Operating Officer

Thinking big and delivering results describe Laura’s 24 years of executive experience in supply chain, logistics and transportation management. Laura has managed some of the largest Fortune 100 supply chains in the United States from a strategic and operational level. She held key positions at Menlo Worldwide Logistics, The Complete Logistics Company, Innovative Logistics, and ABF Freight System. When she’s not laser focused on bringing value, innovation and continuous improvement to our clients, she’s dedicating time to her local church, husband and two boys. Laura attended Oklahoma State University where she received a degree in Industrial Engineering.

Rennie Faulkner

Chief Financial Officer

In business, success ultimately boils down to the numbers. Rennie gets strategy and numbers. He began his finance career as an investment banker, advising growing companies on mergers, acquisitions and capital raising transactions. He subsequently held CFO positions in the retail industry for Kirkland’s, Inc. and The Cato Corporation. Rennie knows that the supply chain can be a driver to operational efficiency and business value, and that Transportation Insight’s success begins and ends with our ability to deliver measurable value to our clients. Rennie graduated with an Economics degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and he received his MBA from Wharton. He invests his personal time in several ministries located in Charlotte, where he lives with his wife and four children.

Rick Brumett may not have written the book on end-to-end supply chain solutions, but he could have. Rick has more than 30 years of logistics and supply chain management experience at companies such as Wal-Mart and ABF Freight System. Rick, a consummate professional and gentleman, offers a helping hand to just about anyone he meets. His expert-level knowledge of global transportation networks, warehousing and retail distribution makes a significant impact for our clients. Rick received his MBA from the University of Arkansas and is regarded by those who know him as a man of family and faith.

Sophie Dabbs

For all the supply chain expertise at Transportation Insight, there’s only one Sophie Dabbs. Sophie leverages her multitudes of experience working with a shipper, a carrier and a 3PL when leading her team in the development of innovative solutions for Transportation Insight clients. A major reason why Transportation Insight continues to be ranked among the most innovative 3PLs in North America, Sophie understands the need to listen to shippers’ challenges to enable them to succeed. A native of South Carolina, Sophie is passionate about traveling as she tries to explore to new places as often as possible. Sophie earned her degree in Business Administration and Marketing from Converse College.

Whether he’s shepherding improved processes into place or helping develop innovative TMS technology for our clients, Clay understands that it’s all about the client. During his time at Menlo Worldwide, Clay managed over $1 billion in purchased transportation. He has more than a decade of experience in non-asset based logistics management. His engagement with clients has included transportation planning and process management, engineering, continuous improvement and Transportation Management System (TMS) process design and integration. The only things Clay is more devoted to than the University of Tennessee Volunteers and Transportation Insight are his wife and two boys.

It’s safe to say that Eric Lail is in a class by himself. Having been trained by Toyota and Shingijutsu, Eric is one of only 200 Shingo Prize examiners in the world and has led LEAN journeys for companies ranging from $5 million to $8 billion in sales. While conducting more than 400 kaizen events in dozens of companies throughout North America, Eric has helped companies such as HON, Hickory Chair, Snyder’s-Lance, Kohler, Sara Lee, Hansgrohe and Mohawk see marked improvement in their operations by teaching those companies how to go to the GEMBA (where the truth can be found) and find the best ideas for process improvement. Eric experienced continuous improvement firsthand when he became a National Champion on North Carolina State University’s competitive cheerleading squad. His wife and two children would agree that Eric strives for excellence and serves his church and community with great passion.

Chris has been a pricing genius at Transportation Insight for so long we like to think that he came with the building. With expert knowledge in the asset-based and non-asset-based transportation industries and 30 years of executive experience at companies such as ABF and AFS Logistics, Chris understands the relationship dynamics between shippers, carriers and third-party providers. Chris’s commitment to delivering top value for each client, while ensuring a carrier base that can deliver on its promises, continues to create a winning formula for hundreds of clients. Chris is also a world traveler, as he and his son enjoy spending time together visiting new places. Whether you need to classify freight in a split second or select your next vacation spot, Chris Mendenhall is your man.

Parcel Pricing

Charles Moore is our resident guru of Parcel. A UPS and AFS Logistics veteran and pioneer in the service refund and parcel auditing industry, Charles founded Enterprise Resource Logistics, which specialized in developing and implementing cost containment solutions for large-volume parcel shippers. He has vast experience in parcel logistics management agreements involving UPS, FedEx and DHL. Charles has one of the sharpest minds at Transportation Insight and is dedicated to bringing ultimate savings and service to our clients. A native son of Louisiana, Charles is a graduate of Louisiana State University Shreveport and enjoys spending time with his wife and twin sons.

Chad Palmer’s array of experience in value-rich solution development, information technology integration, operational design and process improvement aligns perfectly with Transportation Insight’s reputation for delivering best-of-breed total supply chain solutions. While holding key executive positions at Transplace and J.B. Hunt, Chad managed multi-million dollar accounts for Fortune 100 companies and led strategic supply chain design, client implementations, operations and LEAN Six Sigma training teams. Supply chain solution strategy is in Chad’s DNA, and his knowledge of the supply chain industry is unparalleled. No supply chain is too complex for Chad, and his listen-first, prescribe-later approach is appreciated by his clients. Although he and his family are now residents of the Tar Heel state, Chad and the Palmer crew (wife and two daughters) are Razorbacks at heart. Chad earned a degree in Business and Finance from the University of Arkansas.

With more than 25 years of sourcing, operational and business development experience, Rod Poole understands how to help clients get the most out of their purchasing dollars. Prior to joining Transportation Insight’s sister company, United Sourcing Alliance, Rod held purchasing, business development and executive management positions with Alice Manufacturing Company, Cone Mills and Hanes Industries. But Rod is much more than a sourcing and operational expert. After earning a degree in Chemistry from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, he served his country in the military, becoming a Captain in the United States Army. His values of service and sacrifice make Rod an effective advocate for his clients, as well as a wonderful family man and a valuable addition to the Transportation Insight family.

A veteran of the logistics industry, Paul has been partnering with our clients to develop supply chain solutions for nearly a decade. Paul’s gift for communicating and collaborating with clients to uncover needs, wants and challenges is the essence of Transportation Insight’s desire for long term win-win relationships. Paul’s competitive spirit is infectious but not surprising. He played college baseball at Creighton University while earning a degree in Marketing. Overall, the Schmitz family is full of athletes. Paul’s wife played softball for Creighton University, his daughter plays college volleyball and his son is committed to play college baseball. Overall, Paul keeps score by helping our clients win.

As an expert in information technology management with an emphasis on TMS and WMS solutions, Jim Taylor leads our company’s technology team. Through his stellar career, Jim has held key management positions with Ryder Supply Chain Solutions, Total Logistic Control, ABX Logistics and DHL/Exel, providing senior leadership in the development of technology-based solutions for clients of all sizes and shapes. Jim knows the importance of hard work and sacrifice, as he joined the United States Marine Corps, eventually becoming Captain after acquiring a degree in International Affairs from the University of Nebraska. Jim is a family man, first and foremost, and enjoys spending time on the lake with his wife and two kids.

An avid distance runner, Josh Walker knows that one must set many small goals along the way in order to achieve ultimate success. Josh and his team maintain our familial culture, making Transportation Insight a great place not only to have a job, but also to make a career. Josh previously held key positions as Controller of The Systems Depot and Manager of Capital Projects at Cardinal Health Oral Technologies, and has also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hickory Christian Academy. Josh knows what it means to deliver results with excellence outside of the workplace as well. As the head coach of Hickory Christian Academy’s soccer program for nearly 10 years, his teams have earned a National Championship and four State Titles. Josh earned his BS in Finance from Bob Jones University and his MBA from the University of Tampa. Josh is a devoted family man for his wife and three children.

Jay Wilson is a big reason that Transportation Insight is able to offer best-in-class financial settlement operations to its clients. For more than 25 years, Jay has developed and led teams of all sizes through process improvement implementations. He has experience with companies such as Roadway Express, Averitt Express and Boyles Furniture. Jay is a leader who takes his team’s best interests to heart. He enjoys spending quality time with his wife and two kids, whether they’re at football games in the fall and winter or being out on the lake in the spring and summer. He earned his degree in Public Relations and Marketing from Appalachian State University, where he was a co-captain for the Mountaineers’ football team.
